Review: Parker-Fury for WBO World HW Title & its promotion.

The fight was anticipated, regardless of the careless promotion, to be worthy of HW-level initially between the two young genuine boxing pedigrees but that wasn’t the case.

Promotion screw-up:

Now Hearn has been subjected to criticism multiple times but that was nothing as compared to what Henessey managed to put up. Could only manage to sell 5K tickets in an arena with capacity of 21K. That speaks volumes of it. Moreover it was announced to be a YouTube PPV which, by the way, was supposed to be a potential game changer, only added to fans’ misery as it wasn’t easily accessible.

The Fight:

Whilst it’s true that on one hand, Fury didn’t do enough to take the title. No combinations, lack of power in shots and looking to neutralize his opponent with good control of distance (roughly known as running away); similar tactics to that of his cousin’s in his infamous win over Klitschko, though not as fruitful. Whilst on the other hand, Parker looked no different. In fact he looked average almost throughout the fight. Admittedly, he was relentless and aggressive yet it didn’t help him land more cleaner shots.

The Kiwi was quick to rush the Brit early, forcing him to ropes. He continued to steam in and rush his work, which, with the help of Fury’s foot work and his missing shots made it look messy; whereas, Fury chose to box on the backfoot throughout – his gameplan to which Parker had no answer.

Result:

Fury drew on one card 114-114, whilst the other two judges scored the fight 118-110, which appeared quite harsh on the challenger who suffered his first pro defeat.

What do we make of this fight?

Parker looked so off colour, and in no way in hell is he going to stand a chance against any of the top names in the HW division in this form. His lack of defence was worrisome; defensively wreckless when throwing his own shots but he does go for knockouts. The likes of Ortiz, Whyte, Chisora would be rubbing their hands.. However, Fury looked to have possessed the potential to excel in the division in future IF he’s learnt anything from the fight.

If age has anything to do with what future holds then these two have the time to become HW elites, that is, if they don’t perish by then..

Final word:

All in all, shocking build-up, promotion and production. However, it was an intriguing fight for traditionalists.
